How to hire better in Hungary
Practical lessons on building a hiring process that actually works in the Hungarian market.
In many fields the Hungarian job market is candidate-driven: good people choose between several offers, and a slow, opaque hiring process loses the best of them before the first interview. These steps work for small teams and large employers alike.
1. Write a listing great candidates want to answer
The first three lines of a listing decide everything. Say concretely what the work will be in the first months, who the person will work with, and what salary range you have in mind. "Dynamic team" and "competitive salary" say nothing — specifics immediately filter out people the role doesn't suit.
Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. Overlong requirement lists especially discourage early-career candidates and women from applying, even when they would be a good fit.
2. Keep the process short and predictable
Decide in advance how many rounds there will be, and put it in the listing. Two or three rounds are enough for most roles. Every applicant should hear back — rejections included — ideally within a week. Anyone who waits weeks for news will have said yes somewhere else.
If you use a take-home task, keep it short (a few hours at most) and tied to the real work. A paid task is even better: it attracts more serious candidates and helps your employer brand.
3. Measure where candidates drop out
Track how many people apply, how many move past each round, and how long it takes from application to offer. If many candidates turn down offers, it's usually pay or process length — and both can be fixed.

4. Don't overlook candidates outside Budapest
Plenty of skilled people work outside the capital: Debrecen, Szeged, Győr, Pécs and Kecskemét are all strong job markets. Where the role allows, hybrid or fully remote work multiplies your candidate pool — say so clearly in the listing.
